Android Integration – What gives?

posted in: Blog Post | 6

I am consistently asked, “Why do so many radios specifically work for iPhone and not Android based phones?”.  It is simple but still irritating.  Although the majority of smart phone consumers have an Android based phone instead of an iPhone, iPhone dominates the 12 volt integration industry.  The explanation basically revolves around simplicity. All iPhones use the same operating system, iTunes.  Android phones use different operating systems determined by service provider and phone manufacturer.  One is not like all the others.  Therefore, Pioneer and Alpine would have to create something that would work with all Android phones and there is no way they would invest that kind of money.  Until Android is the same across the market, which most likely will not happen, then the most commonly used operating system is iTunes.

However, I am predicting that iTunes will soon be not such a big deal unless they get their innovative juices flowing.   The same could be said for satellite radio as well.  We have seen a huge decrease in satellite radio sales since Bluetooth Audio  became more prevalent.  Ahh…Bluetooth audio.  Where have you been all my life?   I personally was a “I only listen to my iPod” audio listener.  I loved the convenience of going right to whatever song or playlist I was in the mood for.  Now, its iPod, schmiPod.  Why bother?  I have Bluetooth audio on my car stereo.  This is The New feature to have, my friends.  If you have a smart phone, yes even an iPhone, you can simply and wirelessly stream whatever audio files or internet radio you can access from your phone to your Bluetooth Audio capable car stereo.

This is where I would normally say with a girly high pitched tone, “LOVE IT!!!”  I do. I love it.  Who needs an iPod anymore?  I don’t, that is for sure.  Sure I do still use it, but as an afterthought.  I imagine that would make most iPod innovators go, “hhmmm” since I am certain I am not alone in this.  The issue for now, and I am certain it is temporary, to get Bluetooth audio, you must buy a higher priced stereo. Usually the ones with a whole bunch of features you may not need or want.  But don’t despair, soon my friends, before you know it you will have Bluetooth audio for some ridiculously low price that will boggle my mind in another two years.  I love Bluetooth audio so much I will continue this subject in the near future.

It’s definitely one of our favorite audio features. Some phones will also allow an XM or Sirius app allowing you to skip buying the hardware and installation. That way you can get satellite radio on your phone and use it in your car.
